Erwan Black
Erwan Black is a plain wallpaper in a single black shade, with no motif or repeat to line up. Because there is nothing to match from roll to roll, the wall reads as one continuous surface, and the colour carries the whole effect. Black covers a wall more completely than lighter tones, so corners and edges recede and the outlines of furniture stand out against it.
Color and surface
A solid black ground gives you a neutral backdrop in the strictest sense: it adds no pattern for other things in the room to compete with. Framed pictures, mirrors, open shelving and pale wood all gain contrast in front of it. The deeper the shade on the wall, the more attention goes to what sits against it, which is why plain dark walls are often used behind a single piece rather than across a whole room. These are premium quality wallpapers. If you want to compare shades, the full black selection is worth browsing, and the wider range of solid wallpapers covers the same idea in other colors.
Style and rooms
The design belongs to minimalism: one color, no ornament, nothing to date. It suits rooms furnished with few pieces and clear lines, and it works with metal, glass, concrete and leather as readily as with plain painted joinery. Used on all four walls it makes a room feel enclosed; used on one, it divides the space and gives the rest of the paintwork something to sit against.
- Living rooms, including behind a sofa or around a media unit
- Bedrooms, as a full wall behind the headboard
- Hallways, kitchens and dining rooms
- Home offices, bathrooms and nurseries
In a single accent wall it marks out a seating or viewing area without any change to the layout. Behind a screen or on a wall with a TV unit the dark ground reduces the visual break between the device and the wall itself. In a work room it keeps the field of view plain, and in a bedroom it pairs easily with light bedding and warm lamps.
